LyondellBasell’s Chocolate Bayou Plant Receives Top Safety Award, Celebrates 30 Years

June 04, 2018

ALVIN, TEXAS – June 4, 2018 – The Chocolate Bayou Plant of LyondellBasell, one of the world’s largest plastics, chemicals and refining companies, received the 2017 Elite Gold Safety Award from the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) for exceptional safety performance. Representing the top one percent of industry performers, the Elite Gold Safety Award recognizes petrochemical plants with excellent safety performance and program innovation. Staff from the site was on hand for the awards ceremony at the National Safety Conference in San Antonio. Additionally, the plant recently celebrated its 30th anniversary.

“Safety has underpinned our operations for three decades,” said Greg Gray, site manager of LyondellBasell’s Chocolate Bayou Plant. “Our employees work hard every day to ensure we return home to our families exactly how we left. Being recognized for our safe operations on the heels of our 30th anniversary makes this award even more meaningful and really speaks to the continued dedication of our staff.”

The facility has gone three years without a recordable injury, five years without a level two or greater process safety incident and will reach 10 years without a level two or greater environmental incident at the end of May. In 2016, the plant was recognized with AFPM’s Elite Silver Award and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Voluntary Protection Programs’ Star of Excellence Award.

Doug Loy, senior health, safety and environment specialist, has been with the plant since LyondellBasell acquired it from Amoco 30 years ago, and points to the close-knit bond among his colleagues as a reason safety is so ingrained at the facility.

“Our coworkers are like family,” Loy said. “We spend time together, watch each other’s children grow up, support and encourage each other. This personal connection makes us stronger and more determined to maintain a facility free of operational issues or injuries.”

Built in 1978, the Chocolate Bayou Plant contains the only horizontal slurry loop reactors in the Americas. Site expansions include the recent installation of two regenerative thermal oxidizers, which will reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by approximately 200 tons per year.
