LyondellBasell Edison Plant Hosts Students from Netherlands

October 03, 2018

EDISON, NJ.- October 3, 2018 – The LyondellBasell Edison plant recently welcomed a group of Dutch students from Delft University of Technology. These young engineers toured the facility and visited with staff to learn more about the company.

“We were thrilled to educate future chemical engineers on how LyondellBasell operates around the world and the opportunities we provide our employees,” said Antero Ortega Velazco, Edison site manager. “The students were intrigued by our processes and how our plant fits into the global picture of LyondellBasell as a growing corporation.”

Technologisch Gezelschap (TG) is the study association for all chemical technological programs at Delft University of Technology. This includes the bachelor program Molecular Science & Technology and the master program Chemical Engineering. The name Technologisch Gezelschap can loosely be translated to “technological society”.

TG organizes many different activities for the budding engineers while visiting the United States and Canada on their foreign excursion tour. Lectures, symposia and company visits have been the highlights of their recent trip.

"It was really interesting to see the working environment at the Edison Plant, where everyone, even the interns, have such responsibility," said Maaike Nielsen, a student in the program.

During the visit, students spent time with Edison summer co-op interns discussing manufacturing opportunities and career paths.

“Manufacturing as a culture is the same in many ways around the world,” said Muhammad Shao, Edison reliability engineer co-op. “It was great to speak with students like myself to compare notes and understand what careers in chemistry really have to offer as we learn about this industry.”

The Edison facility manufactures the company’s Avant ZN catalysts used in the production of polypropylene plastic resins. The plant serves as a supplier of polyethylene and polypropylene catalysts to the company’s customers worldwide. These products are used in the manufacture of automotive parts, plastic toys, containers and home furnishings.
