FAIRPORT HARBOR, OH. – Oct. 3, 2017 – Deaglan Powers of Painesville has dreamed of becoming an Eagle Scout, the highest achievement rank attainable in the Boy Scout program, since he joined the organization as a young Cub Scout at the age of 6.
Working diligently on his Eagle Scout leadership project, Powers, now 16 and a junior at Lake Catholic High School, knew if he wanted to complete a project that would make a difference he would need to put together a plan, connect with the right people and execute his idea.
That’s when Powers contacted managers at LyondellBasell’s Fairport Harbor Plant. LyondellBasell is one of the largest plastics, chemical and refining companies in the world.
“I have enjoyed the many benefits of Lake Metroparks, so I decided to create benches where people could stop, rest and enjoy the beautiful scenery the park offers,” Powers said.
The Eagle Scout leadership project is an extensive project that must be planned, organized, led and managed by the scout. Only four percent of Boy Scouts are awarded Eagle Rank after a lengthy review process. The requirements necessary to achieve an Eagle Scout rank take years to fulfill, and require at least 21 merit badges which include everything from first aide to family life badges.
“Not only did LyondellBasell agree to participate by purchasing all the materials needed, they also provided personal protective equipment to keep me safe,” Powers said.
Michael Gregory, an Operations Supervisor at LyondellBasell knew he couldn’t provide materials without the safety equipment.
“We have a strong belief and passion for working safely all the time,” said Gregory. “It was important that we provide safety glasses, hand and hearing protection to keep Deaglan safe while completing his project.”
In addition, LyondellBasell provided all the lumber and arranged for the delivery of the materials to Powers.
“For me this really was two-fold,” said Powers. “I spent about three weekends with volunteers putting together the benches for the park, but I also was exposed to the folks at LyondellBasell who went out of their way for me, because they believed in what I was doing for the community.”
