Corporate Grant Provides Smoke Detectors for Residents

LA PORTE, Texas – Feb. 26, 2016 – LyondellBasell, one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, was recently honored for being a responsible corporate partner at the La Porte Volunteer Fire Department annual banquet. Health, Safety and Environmental Senior Specialist Chris Israel accepted the award that commended LyondellBasell for a $5,000 corporate grant.

“We maintain a close association with the La Porte Volunteer Fire Department and have provided mutual aid to assist them with incidents outside our fence line,” said Israel, who also serves as the fire chief for the LyondellBasell La Porte incident responders. “Because safety plays a key role in our mission to be the best operated company in our industry, we know prevention is critical.”

The LyondellBasell donation will help with the development and implementation of the “Detect to Protect” program. This proactive approach includes a fire safety visit to install smoke detectors in residential homes. The staff also advises residents about the placement and operation of the devices.

“This program aims to ensure that there is a working smoke detector in every home that the La Porte Volunteer Fire Department serves,” said Assistant Chief Donald Ladd. “To date, our department has installed 100 smoke detectors. Without corporate assistance, we would not have been able to improve the safety standards in our community.”

The La Porte Volunteer Fire Department responds to an average of 1,300 calls every year and promotes awareness with a series of programs designed to protect residents. According to the American Red Cross, having a working smoke alarm reduces one’s chances of dying in a fire by nearly half.

“Volunteer fire departments make every dollar count, but the value working smoke detectors bring in terms of protecting residents is immeasurable,” said Israel. “Just like firefighters have equipment to battle a blaze, homeowners should have the right equipment for an early warning that could save their lives.”
